The short version
- The tool is free to use.
- The token counts and cost estimates are best-effort, not guaranteed.
- Do not bill a customer against this number — use the provider's own usage report.
- We are not liable for decisions made on the estimates.
- We may change or discontinue the service at any time.
1. The service
AI Token Calculator is a free, browser-based tool that estimates (a) how many tokens a piece of text will consume against a given model's tokenizer, and (b) what that input plus an expected output will cost at the model's published API rate. The tool does not connect to any provider's API on your behalf. It does not generate text. It does not process prompts.
2. Accuracy and disclaimer
The token counts are produced by three different methods, depending on the provider:
- OpenAI models: counted by OpenAI's official tiktoken tokenizer (exact to within a single token on English text).
- Open-weight models (Meta Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, IBM Granite, NVIDIA Nemotron, Writer Palmyra, Tencent Hunyuan): counted by Hugging Face Transformers.js running the published tokenizer file. Accuracy is ±3% on English, ±5% on CJK and European languages.
- Closed-weight models without a published browser tokenizer (Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, xAI Grok, Cohere Command, Baidu ERNIE, ByteDance Doubao, Moonshot Kimi, Z.AI GLM, Amazon Nova, Microsoft Azure OpenAI, MiniMax): counted by a character-based estimator. Accuracy is ±15–20%.
The prices are taken from each provider's official pricing page at the date listed on the Pricing Sources section. Prices change without notice. Do not use this calculator for billing reconciliation. For billing, always trust the usage field returned by the provider's own API response.
3. No professional advice
The calculator is a planning tool. It is not financial advice, not tax advice, and not a quote. If you are sizing a budget for a production workload, double-check the numbers against a representative request and the provider's dashboard before committing.
4. Intellectual property
The site code, the data file (data/models.json), and the article content are owned by AI Token Calculator and licensed for personal, non-commercial reuse with attribution. The tokenizer files loaded from the CDN are owned by their respective publishers (OpenAI, Hugging Face) and are governed by their licenses.
5. Third-party services
The site depends on third-party services we do not control: jsDelivr (CDN), Hugging Face (transformer files), and optionally Google Analytics. If any of those services is down, the tool may stop working. We are not responsible for their availability or their data practices.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, AI Token Calculator and its operators are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the Service, including but not limited to: incorrect cost estimates, incorrect token counts, decisions made on the basis of the estimates, downtime of the Service, or actions of third-party service providers.
7. Changes to the service and these terms
We may update the tool, add or remove providers, and refresh prices without notice. We will update the "Last updated" date above when these terms change materially. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
